[00:00:00] Speaker A: This is the Morning Journey. Rewind with Mark and Brittany. Never miss a moment.
[00:00:05] Speaker B: This week on the Morning Journey podcast, Mark and Brittany laugh from all the dad jokes. And one lucky dad is going to see the Hill City Howlers. Mark tells Brittany how she can grow taller. Stella, Brittany's daughter, gets caught doing something she shouldn't. And would you pay your kids to read?
[00:00:20] Speaker C: Well, many of you entered our Father's Day giveaway contest. That was to win tickets to see Lynchburg's baseball team, the Hill City Howlers. Now, to enter, you had to include your best dad joke. And we had some really good ones.
[00:00:35] Speaker D: We did. We had some really good ones. So, drumroll.
[00:00:38] Speaker C: Here it comes.
[00:00:39] Speaker D: The winner is. Weston. Yeah. Congratulations, Weston. You won a four pack of tickets to see the Hill City Howlers for Father's Day. What brand of underwear do scientists wear?
Kelvin Klein.
Congratulations, Weston, on winning. And happy Father's Day to your dad.
[00:00:58] Speaker E: We're just gonna worship, we're gonna be encouraged, and we're just gonna be together.
[00:01:04] Speaker A: That's the idea. You're on the Morning Journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:01:08] Speaker C: Well, we've talked about this before. So Brittany is concerned that she's actually shrinking.
[00:01:13] Speaker D: Look, my whole life I thought I was five, seven and a half. And then I realized I'm only five, six and three quarters. So it's already started. I thought I had till I was 80 before I got shorter, but apparently not.
[00:01:23] Speaker C: So I saw this video the other day on social media, and it was the 20 things that you.
To grow taller. And you have to do these every day.
[00:01:32] Speaker D: Every day.
[00:01:33] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:01:33] Speaker C: We're not gonna talk about all 20.
So you need to do a dead hang. That's where you're hanging from a bar.
[00:01:39] Speaker D: Okay, that one makes sense.
[00:01:40] Speaker C: You gotta do that to stretch yourself out. Okay.
You need to do the cobra stretch.
[00:01:46] Speaker D: Not doing that.
[00:01:47] Speaker C: Okay. That's where you're on the ground, and then you're basically arching your back.
[00:01:50] Speaker D: Isn't that like a yoga move?
[00:01:52] Speaker C: Yes. And that's also one of the things you need to be doing. You need to be doing yoga every day.
[00:01:55] Speaker D: You do yoga every day?
[00:01:56] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:01:56] Speaker C: You can do it every day.
Stop slouching.
[00:01:59] Speaker D: That's a good one. I need to do that. That's.
[00:02:01] Speaker F: Sure.
[00:02:01] Speaker D: I would gain a couple inches if I just sat up straight. That would make sense.
[00:02:05] Speaker C: Yeah. You also need to be eating your zinc.
[00:02:08] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:02:09] Speaker F: Are you.
[00:02:09] Speaker C: Are you doing that every day?
[00:02:11] Speaker D: No, not that I'm aware of.
[00:02:12] Speaker C: Okay, well, you need to start.
[00:02:13] Speaker D: Okay.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: Also sprints.
[00:02:17] Speaker D: Absolutely not doing that.
[00:02:18] Speaker C: Perfect for you right now?
[00:02:19] Speaker D: Yeah.
39 weeks pregnant in the heat of the summer. I'm going to be running sprints down the street. Don't think so.
[00:02:25] Speaker C: Intense sprints.
[00:02:26] Speaker D: It says, no thank you. Not doing that one.
[00:02:28] Speaker C: And then we talked about this when you need to be doing yoga with once a day.
There you go.
[00:02:33] Speaker D: Well, I guess I'll just be short.
[00:02:34] Speaker C: You will grow taller.
[00:02:35] Speaker D: I do need to stop slouching though. I might get one of those back braces that like hold my shoulders in place because slouching is a big thing of mine that I struggle with. So that's probably the only one I'm gonna do every day.
[00:02:47] Speaker F: I just kind of channel surfing through the radio.
[00:02:49] Speaker A: Families are catching on and I'm like,
[00:02:51] Speaker F: wow, this is pretty cool.
[00:02:52] Speaker A: To the best way.
[00:02:53] Speaker F: But now this is the only thing I listen to now to wake up. My style of everything has started to change.
[00:02:57] Speaker A: It's the morning journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:03:00] Speaker C: So I was looking over the list of things we were going to talk about this morning and I saw for this break it said Stella rocks.
[00:03:07] Speaker D: Oh my goodness.
[00:03:07] Speaker C: That is Stella's daughter. She does rock. But I don't think that's what we're going to talk about.
[00:03:12] Speaker D: No.
So the one way to make parent friends as an adult is go out to restaurants that have an outdoor area where kids can run around and play together.
[00:03:20] Speaker F: Yeah.
[00:03:20] Speaker D: So we were out to dinner, I think it was like Monday. And sure enough, Stella's playing with these kids, everything's going good and all of a sudden the dad comes over and he's like, hey, is that your little girl? And I'm like, yeah, her name's Stella. And he's like, oh, I, that's my son she's playing with. And then he goes, I just want to let you know that she's putting rocks in her mouth.
And I thought like we were going to like have like set up a play date for the future. Like I thought, great, this is going to be perfect. We're making friends. Parent friends. Nope. He wanted to let us know that our four year old, she is almost four, is putting rocks in her mouth.
[00:03:51] Speaker C: Well, that's. But she's, she's three. She's three years old.
[00:03:55] Speaker D: She's what like one in two year olds do because they don't know any better. She is old enough to think there
[00:03:59] Speaker C: are five year olds that are putting rocks in their mouth.
[00:04:02] Speaker D: So then I have to go get her and be like, how many rocks did you eat? Eat? Cause that's gonna be a problem. Later. And she was like, jaws filled with a little chipmunk. She's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
Luckily, she didn't swallow any of them. She was like, I was just pretending. I was just putting them in my mouth. And I was like, how many times do you have to tell a child the only thing that goes in your mouth is food and drinks? That's it. Not rocks, not toys. So we had to have a very serious conversation. And then I was embarrassed by the other parent who has like a one year old and who was not putting rocks in his mouth.
[00:04:34] Speaker C: Stellar rocks.
[00:04:35] Speaker D: Yes.
[00:04:38] Speaker A: Start on a positive note. You're on the morning journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:04:43] Speaker C: We were talking earlier about what makes you happy, and one of the things people mentioned was reading. A mom says she has zero regrets about paying her kids to read. They earn money when they complete a book with chapters.
[00:04:56] Speaker D: Now. She also said she does not pay them for chores, which makes sense to me because chores are household things that have to get done. And so I. And I got paid growing up for grades like A's and B's. I didn't get anything for C's, but I got paid for A's and B's. So this kind of makes sense to me. It's $5 per book. She said they would read things like graphic novels that had short little, like basically captions on the page. But getting them to read a chapter book or match their reading level was so hard for her. She said this really got them over the hump. And I don't think $5 a book is that steep of a price. So I think it's a good idea.
[00:05:29] Speaker C: What's also interesting, the mom and the husband are both accountants, so they set up a reading payment plan. And so along with helping their kids to have a love of reading and carry that with them for the rest of their life, they're also using it to teach their kids about money.
[00:05:46] Speaker D: Yeah, Teaching them finance along the way. I think it's a win win for both the parents and the kids. They'll love to read, although when they get older, they'll realize you don't get paid to read. Like, all the reading programs are geared towards kids, so they should enjoy it while they can. Getting paid, getting involved in all those reading programs, the public library.
Enjoy that while you can. Because when you get to be an adult, it's like, do you have time to read? Do you still want to read?
[00:06:10] Speaker C: Hopefully they will still want to read.
[00:06:12] Speaker D: I hope so.
[00:06:13] Speaker F: I turn y' all on in the morning when I get in my truck, it's helpful.
[00:06:17] Speaker D: I'm taking the kids to school. Here we go.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: It's the Morning Journey with Mark and
[00:06:21] Speaker C: Brittany to get involved with our baby bottle campaign. This is our project that we do every year with the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center. This year it's virtual, not just limited to central Virginia. So wherever you're listening, you can be involved in and support the work that BRPC does and helping women facing an unplanned pregnancy.
[00:06:42] Speaker D: You've heard the saying, put your money where your mouth is. Well, this is an opportunity to do just that. A lot of people talk about supporting life, but this is one way to practically do that. And so you can go to myjourneyfm.com now until Father's Day, which is this weekend. Don't forget about that either. But you can donate to the Blue Ridge Pregnancy center right there via their virtual baby bottle campaign.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: Start on a positive note. You're on the Morning Journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:07:07] Speaker D: You're on the Morning journey with Mark and Brittany. Hi. What's your name?
[00:07:10] Speaker E: Hi.
[00:07:11] Speaker F: This is Sean.
[00:07:12] Speaker C: Hi, Sean.
[00:07:13] Speaker F: I just want y' all to know y' all helped me start my morning on the way to work off perfectly every day.
[00:07:20] Speaker E: Oh, thank you.
[00:07:22] Speaker F: And it all started about a year ago.
[00:07:24] Speaker C: Uh huh.
[00:07:25] Speaker F: I was scanning through the stations and come across you and y' all were playing Micah Tyler's People Like Us.
[00:07:32] Speaker C: Ah, yeah.
[00:07:33] Speaker F: And when I heard that song, I'm like, wait a minute, that's me.
[00:07:39] Speaker C: That's all I've been.
Yeah.
[00:07:41] Speaker D: That's awesome.
[00:07:42] Speaker C: That is fantastic.
[00:07:44] Speaker F: And, and the beauty of it is though, like, I ride my windows down no matter what, what the temperature is. And people, I'll be blaring, blaring the journey wherever I go. And people like, hey, turn that up. I'm like, okay, cool.
[00:07:59] Speaker D: I love it. Thank you so much for telling us.
[00:08:01] Speaker C: Thank you, Sean. That is great.
[00:08:03] Speaker A: A great way to start your day. The Morning Journey with Mark and Brittany.

[00:08:57] Speaker C: I've never been to Spain. My brother in law's been. He said Spain is beautiful.
[00:09:00] Speaker D: Well, right now you're broadcasting in Spain.

We also have Diary of the Mom Squad, which is me and Kate. We do that once a month just talking to other moms about how they're navigating this thing called parenthood. And then we have the Morning Journey rewind. So if you ever miss anything from me and Mark, you can catch that every week. And then Laura does a little Hope Cast as well. If you're into need of hope today. And we might have a new one coming to the lineup soon, so make sure you familiarize yourself with the page. Myjourneyfm.com Click on our podcast page or you can search any of those wherever you listen to your podcast.
[00:10:04] Speaker A: Uplifting and encouraging because you need it now more than ever.
[00:10:08] Speaker F: You betcha.
[00:10:09] Speaker A: The Morning Journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:10:12] Speaker C: As you go throughout your day today and you pray before you do that, really think about the power of prayer.
[00:10:20] Speaker D: Yeah, we all know the verse Philippians 4. 6. Do not be anxious about anything. But in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And it's easy to say, don't be anxious, but sometimes it's hard. But when we pray, we magnify the work of Jesus. We leave that prison of anxiety and worry, and we allow the Holy Spirit to align our hearts with the Father. So we know that prayer is powerful. I think sometimes we tend to forget.
[00:10:48] Speaker C: Yeah, I think we do. And that verse in Philippians is such a great reminder of what prayer actually does, that communication with the Heavenly Father, with the God of the universe.
[00:11:01] Speaker D: He made you. He created you. He knows you before you even pray. He knows what you're thinking. And so I challenge you today, when you get those negative thoughts, those thoughts of worry, that anxious anxiety, that immediately just give it over to the Lord, even if it's as simple as, Lord, I'm feeling anxious about this. Will you take this fear, this anxiety, this worry away from me and just see how much that changes your day.
[00:11:24] Speaker A: We just wanted to say thanks for making us part of your day. It's the morning journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:11:30] Speaker C: I am not a big coffee drinker. About one cup a day. I have that when I get up early in the morning. And mine is more of just kind of a mild or a medium breakfast blend. I don't really drink a strong coffee.
[00:11:43] Speaker D: I'm the same way because I don't really. I like the taste of creamer, so my coffee looks more white than black.
[00:11:49] Speaker C: Do you use the sweet creamer?
[00:11:50] Speaker D: I use, like, sugar free, like, gotcha. Yeah. So I try to keep it, like, no sugar at least. But I'll do, like, a cup first thing in the morning when I get up because it's, like, warm on my throat and nice. And then I'll do like, a cup with breakfast when I get home. And right now it's all decaf because I'm pregnant. But even, like, when I'm not pregnant, caffeine doesn't do anything for me. So I could probably always drink decaf. It'd be fine. I just like the taste of it. So if it doesn't taste good and if it's super strong, I don't want it.
[00:12:15] Speaker C: Yeah, I use a sweet creamer. I like that in mine. That keeps me from using sugar and everything else in that. So that I like. But I'm not a four or five cups a day person.
[00:12:25] Speaker D: Not either one, two at the most. And then we tried that mushroom coffee a while back. Not that long ago.
Have you done any of that?
[00:12:33] Speaker C: No, I still drink it on occasion.
[00:12:35] Speaker D: My dad does, too. I found some in their pantry the last time I visit.
How do you like that? And he's like, it's okay once you
[00:12:40] Speaker C: get used to the taste. Because it is a different taste than your regular coffee.
[00:12:44] Speaker D: Earthy.
[00:12:44] Speaker C: Yeah. But once you get used to it, it doesn't bother me. I like it.
[00:12:48] Speaker D: I'm sure if you put enough creamer in it, it would taste just fine.
[00:12:50] Speaker C: Some people need a strong coffee. This one person shared. I want a coffee that walks into my brain, flips a table over, and says, get up. We have responsibilities.
[00:13:01] Speaker D: Yeah, I think my husband is that person. Unless he's had his coffee, don't talk to him in the morning.
[00:13:07] Speaker A: Good company makes for a great day. The Morning Journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:13:12] Speaker C: Brittany and her daughter have been enjoying some afternoons at the pool.
[00:13:17] Speaker D: Yes, the weather has been wonderful, and our pool is really big, and it's never really crowded, and so we've been enjoying the pool. But yesterday my husband's like, I'm jealous. I want to go to the pool. So I was like, well, run up here, and then we'll drive you home so that you can, like, actually get in the water, because no one wants to run with wet shorts. That would not be a fun time. So he, like, runs up there and surprises Stella, and she's like, daddy, she's so excited. She's like, jump.
So they jump in the pool, and as soon as he gets in, she, like, beelines it for the stairs where her little friends are playing. And he's like, do you want me to swim with you? And she's like, no, I'm okay.
[00:13:49] Speaker C: I'm with my friends.
[00:13:50] Speaker D: I'm with my friends. I mean, she's almost four. I thought we'd have until she was, like, at least 10, maybe 13, before we were, like, uncool. And I told him, I was like, this is what we do every day. It's nice because I get to swim laps and I can, like, lay out and get sun because she does not care that I am there. Unless she needs help with her goggles or a snack, I don't exist. And neither does he, apparently.
[00:14:13] Speaker E: We're just gonna worship, we're gonna be encouraged, and we're just gonna be together.
[00:14:19] Speaker A: That's the idea. You're on the morning journey with Mark and Brittany.
[00:14:23] Speaker C: Our friend Ashley operates a bakery in the area called Sweet Indulgence. They provide the treats for our Tuesday Tasty treats. But there's more to her bakery than just a business. It's an outreach, and it is a ministry.
[00:14:36] Speaker F: And.
[00:14:36] Speaker C: And a baker in Oregon, her name is Wendy, is doing something similar, running a bakery for her community. She runs it out of her driveway.
[00:14:45] Speaker D: Yeah, In a little greenhouse. It's so cool. And so she stocks it full of things like sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls. She said she had a German baker grandmother, and so she's always been a baker, but she decided with her kids getting older, she didn't know really. It was kind of like a midlife crisis. She didn't know what she wanted to do and got the idea to run it out of her greenhouse in her driveway. And so it's really an honor system. People can come in, they can pick out the items they want. She leaves a pad and paper in there so they can calculate how much they owe her and then they can pay her. So she really doesn't have to, like, run the storefront. She just has to make the goods.
[00:15:18] Speaker C: Yeah. And it's all local. She doesn't ship anywhere, but people line up in the driveway to come.
[00:15:24] Speaker D: She said people have driven two hours to come and get her treats. Now, I love a cinnamon roll, but I'm not driving two hours for one. I love this idea. So if you're passionate about something, maybe think of an unconventional way to just make it happen. Because you don't have to have a storefront that costs you money or employees. You can do it right out of your driveway.
[00:15:44] Speaker A: Thanks for catching up on the morning Journey Rewind podcast with Mark and Brittany.
